Facing My Fears

How I Left Panic Behind

I’m going to share something personal with you, because years of working with clients has shown me that fear is a very common experience. So, take a trip down memory lane with me…

It’s 3 AM, my heart is pounding, mind racing, sweaty palms. Night after night, like clockwork, for months. One episode even brought EMT’s to our door. I thought I was having a heart attack. I dreaded these episodes and the complete loss of control.

When it kept happening and I couldn’t figure out why or how to stop it, I started fearing the fear, which only made it worse. I would desperately spin stories to try to figure it out, to make it stop, which only sucked me deeper into the fear.

What I needed was a way to interrupt the cycle.

Enter Mindfulness Practices

At some point I learned that I could step back from the experience and just notice what was happening in my body. I didn’t have to engage; I could just watch.

Mindfulness gave me a little space to observe the experience, instead of being in it. This may sound like a minor distinction, but it is everything. Because if you can observe yourself from a non-judgmental, non-attached place, the racing mind and desperate need to find answers quiets down, and you begin to feel in control, even while the panic is still running.

Your superpowers here are non-attachment and curiosity. “I’m not going to name any of this. I’m just going to observe it and see what it wants to tell me.” This is true of all human experiences. When we get curious about our feelings and behaviors, we learn important things about ourselves and bring “Self” (the inner advocate) on board.

With a background in extreme trauma (3 AM was significant), I needed to use peace practices to teach my body to feel safe again, and to assure my little “parts” that bad things weren’t happening anymore. Sometimes healing looks like updating your software.

Small but Consistent Change

I’m not going to say things changed overnight. But the cumulative impact of observing and not reacting, meditative peace practices, and flower essence remedies did help my body feel safe again. And eventually, the panic attacks stopped completely.

Now, let me be clear. If you are having severe physical symptoms, you shouldn’t ignore them. I did get a complete work up to rule out other physical reasons for the panic. That’s just smart self-care. But when there were no obvious answers, I had to figure out how to take care of myself. Nature and my own self-supporting practices made the difference.

What exactly did that look like? Let me explain.

By wanting the panic to stop, telling stories about it, and trying to get away from it, I was unwittingly perpetuating it! But when you lean into a strong emotion, instead of running from it, it starts to soften. So that’s what I did.

Fear was knocking (more like pounding!) on my door, because it wanted in. So, I opened the door. I stopped telling myself stories to explain the fear and started listening to the Fear. And when I started listening, it didn’t need to scream anymore to get my attention.

Meeting Parts with Compassion

Sometimes, the intense feelings we are trying to escape are just the frightened abandoned children inside of us. When I listened, I discovered a frightened child that needed reassurance and a calm, present adult. Now, I was facing the truth of the problem. I could respond appropriately because I knew what was needed.

This is not easy. You might have been avoiding big emotions for so long that when you finally let them in, they feel too overwhelming to remain present. Flower essences help you stay. They provide a steady undercurrent of calm, and quiet the racing thoughts that feed the big emotions.

They help you step back and remember that you have the resources within to meet yourself with compassion. And because they address the energetic layers of an issue, gently deconstructing and processing at your own pace, the changes they support are sustainable.

Ayahuasca essence creates a “communication bridge” from the brain to the body, helping you make mental connections about yourself. It is also calming, loving and supportive, and serves as an amplifier of the other flower essences in this remedy.

Mimulus addresses an over-exaggerated concern for daily life events, extreme apprehension of new thresholds of experience, bringing with it courage and confidence to face life’s challenges.

Rock Rose essence addresses terror, panic, fear of death or annihilation, lack of embodiment and presence for the immediate situation. This essence brings transcendent courage when facing adversity, helping you remain grounded and present.

Cherry Plum essence addresses fear of losing control, mental and emotional breakdown, desperate or destructive impulses, acute tension, and rigidity. This essence brings spiritual surrender and trust, feeling guided by a higher Power.

White Chestnut essence addresses worrisome, repetitive, and racing thoughts and a restless agitated mental state. It may assist with developing a tranquil disposition and calm mental processes.

Clematis essence addresses the lack of physical presence and grounding, bringing with it a conscious embodiment and interest in the world in the here and now.

Agrimony essence addresses anxiety hidden by a mask of cheerfulness, denial and avoidance of emotional pain, and addictive behavior to anesthetize feelings. This essence brings emotional honesty, acknowledgement of emotional pain, and the ability to radiate genuine inner peace.
